Wanjiru Kamuyu performs An Immigrant’s Story on 10 October.
Wanjiru Kamuyu is a Kenyan-born choreographer, performer and educator based in Paris. Winner of a New York Bessie Award for Outstanding Choreographer, she trained in the United States and began her career with leading companies including Urban Bush Women and Molissa Fenley and Company. She has performed internationally for renowned artists such as Bill T. Jones, Robyn Orlin and Bartabas, while developing her own choreographic work.
In this Pro Session, Wanjiru offers a creative process workshop.
Fuelled by unearthing and illuminating unheard, under-heard, untold, rarely heard, ignored stories, especially of marginalised communities, my work conceives the body as a vector for liberation and healing. Dance is a space of self-transformation and expression, moving beyond words to penetrate the depths of the cellular invisible body.
I create socially and politically engaged works that speak to our human conditions. My works aim to stimulate, evoke and provoke individual and collective reflection through the transformative celebration of dance. Dance gives birth to our limitless potential, providing a window of investigation into the fears, questions, desires that hide in our thoughts and spirit.
