The Future Needs a Banger (working title)

The Future Needs a Banger is the early research phase of a new performance project by choreographer Daniel Conant, developed in close collaboration with composer and sound artist Jonas Friedlich. Rather than focusing on the creation of a finished work, the residency serves as a space for experimentation, bringing together movement, sound and video to explore where our artistic practices intersect and how these different media can shape one another from the very beginning of a creative process.
The research begins with a question: What happens to the body after the death of optimism? Returning to the cultural landscape of the mid-1990s (a moment marked by techno-utopian ideals, the rise of the internet, globalisation, rave culture and the belief that technology and pop culture would bring people together) the residency asks what remains of those promises today. Against a backdrop of political instability, collapsing cultural funding, burnout and an increasingly uncertain future, we are interested in obsolescence: not only of outdated technologies, media and cultural artefacts, but also the growing feeling that certain bodies, artistic practices and ways of imagining the future are themselves becoming obsolete.
Through improvisation, musical composition, video experimentation and choreographic research, we will explore the cultural relics of the 1990s, the relationship between music and movement, autobiographical material, and the shifting emotional landscape between collective optimism and contemporary uncertainty. The research developed during this residency will form the conceptual and artistic foundation for The Future Needs a Banger, a new performance project currently planned to premiere in Munich in 2027.
