Sam Barker

As an artist, I aim to bridge the communication gaps that arise from the “double empathy” problem—seeking to connect with others in a way that feels authentic to me while expressing my personal perceptions and aspirations for the world. I aim to inspire philosophical reflection and engagement through my work, countering today’s throwaway culture by valuing and reinvesting in the centuries of artistic endeavour that came before. My goal is to use the shared cultural language of art to exchange ideas and personal reflections.

As a composer, my approach combines melodic and motivic development within carefully crafted harmonic frameworks, ranging from folk-inspired drones to the harmonic languages of late-Romantic, Impressionist, and serialist music. Aesthetics are central to my work, and I consciously choose approachable forms to invite engagement without alienating the audience. I focus on acoustic instruments, as I see this as a vital way of fostering human connection through music. My inspirations include Satie, Ives, Berg, Stravinsky, Debussy, Cage, Holst, Ligeti, Dyens, and Prokofiev, among others.

As a performer, my jazz improvisations draw inspiration from artists such as Wes Montgomery, Grant Green, Joe Pass, Bill Frisell, John Scofield, and Julien Lage, with my early studies in classical guitar and finger style folk music continuing to influence my sound and approach.

Moving forward, I aim to create work that both references and elevates other artistic traditions, using cross-cultural references to communicate new and original ideas while enriching and modernising established artistic languages, all while honouring their core aesthetic values.
