A two-week research residency at Tipperary Dance in the context of our International Residencies Exchange Programme.
The outcome of this residency will be shared in a double-bill the 10 October.
With the project Amazone, Laura Arend proposes to work on the creation of a female duet on Talestri, Queen of the Amazon | Maria Antonia Walpurgis - OPERA 1760.
"I envision dedicating a significant portion of the residency to research. Concurrently, I will channel a portion of the residency towards the creation of a 7-minute duet. This duet will not only serve as an integral part of the overarching creation but will also possess its own independent narrative and artistic life.
Through the exploration of a duet, I wish to explore the body of the nation in struggle. Throughout the ages, women have engaged in battles, whether physically, like the Amazons, or politically, like contemporary generations of women and feminists. It is this profound notion of combat that I wish to bring to the stage, evoking the perseverance and resilience inherent in the female condition.
I am very interested in working with artists from different physical background. For this first duet, I would like to merge contemporary and ballet approach of the movement. The interweaving of genders, between classical and contemporary dancers, has often manifested itself in the artistic realm. However, far from succumbing to the connotative clichés that usually ensue, my intention is to transcend superficiality and consider their talent as a palette, a painting destined to enrich our collective work. I seek to elevate this stylistic fusion beyond hackneyed conventions, envisioning each movement and expression as conceptual elements, abstract brushes contributing to the intellectual and aesthetic composition of our shared creation" - Laura Arend
